How to Unblock Your MTN & Airtel Line in Nigeria

How to Unblock Your MTN & Airtel Line in Nigeria

So, you woke up one day, tried making a call, and boom—your MTN or Airtel line isn’t working. No calls, no texts, no data. Frustrating, right? If your SIM got blocked due to the ongoing NIN-SIM linkage requirements, don’t worry. Fixing it is easier than you think. Let’s break it down step by step, so you can get back online in no time.

Why Did Your Line Get Blocked?

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) made it mandatory for all SIM cards to be linked with the National Identification Number (NIN). If your line is blocked, it’s most likely because you haven’t linked your NIN, or the process wasn’t completed properly.

Now, let’s move on to how you can unblock it.

How to Unblock Your Line on MTN & Airtel

For MTN Users

MTN makes it easy to check and link your NIN. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Check if your NIN is linked:
    • Visit nin.mtn.ng on your phone.
    • Enter your phone number to see if your NIN is linked.
  2. If Not Linked, Follow These Steps to Fix It:
    • Dial *785#, follow the prompts, and enter your NIN.
    • Or, send your NIN as a text message to 785.
    • If you prefer online, visit nin.mtn.ng and enter your details.
    • You’ll receive an OTP (One-Time Password) to confirm the process.

For Airtel Users

  1. Dial *121# and follow these steps:
    • Select the option for NIN linking.
    • Enter your 11-digit NIN.
    • Wait for a confirmation message that your SIM has been successfully unbarred.
  2. If you still experience issues, visit the nearest Airtel service center with your NIN slip for assistance.

What About Other Networks?

If you use multiple SIMs, here’s a quick guide for other networks:

How Long Does It Take to Get Unblocked?

Most of the time, once your NIN is successfully linked, your line should be restored within a few hours. In rare cases, it might take up to 24–48 hours. If it takes longer, contact your network’s customer care.
