Ghana’s Zip Code: What is Ghana’s Zip and Postal Code?

Ghana Zip Code Postal Code

“What is Ghana’s Zip code?” has to be one of the most googled questions by Ghanaians when filling out forms online.

No matter which part of Ghana you find yourself be it Kumasi, Takoradi, Tamale or Accra, you have definitely been asked to enter your zip code and have had to turn to google for an answer.

The codes people commonly use as Ghana’s Zip code is 00233 or 23321 or +233. These numbers were derived from our “primitive” landline calling system. We want to breakdown what Zip codes are and what the purposes they serve in this article.

Ghana Zip Code

What are Zip Codes?

Introduced in 1963, A Zip Code is a set of distinct numbers which postal services use to identify the location a particular mail is being sent or received from. Initially, Zip codes began with five digits but in 1983, an extended ZIP+4 code (making it nine digits) was introduced to help postal services get more specifics in terms of location.

ZIP is an acronym which expands to Zone Improvement Plan. ZIP Code was originally registered as a servicemark by the United States Postal Service (USPS) which went on to expire in 1997.

Is Ghana’s Zip Code the same as Ghana’s Postal Code (PostCode)?

As earlier stated, a Zip code is a set of distinct numbers which postal services use to identify the location a particular mail is being sent or received from.

By definition, a Zip code is fundamentally the same as a Postal code. The jarring difference is that the term Zip code is used mainly in the United States of America whiles Postal Code is commonly used in other countries.

What then is Ghana’s Zip Code or Postal Code?

There is actually no fixed Zip code for Ghana as stated in the beginning of the article. In fact, the question should be “What are Ghana’s Zip codes?” or “What are Ghana’s Postal codes?” since Zip Codes were designed for geographical locations within countries and not for an entire country.

What this means is that instead of googling “What is Ghana’s Zip code?” one should rather “What is Accra’s Zip code?” or “What is Kumasi’s Zip code?” or “What is Tamale’s Zip code?“. The bad thing is if you should google that right now, google would say it is 00233 may not necessarily be the case because Google uses related keywords in your search term to retrieve such information and it’s not always correct information available online.

It is the responsibility of a country’s government postal or mailing service to issue Zip Codes and Postal Codes. are issued by the country’s government mailing service. Ghana Post is Ghana’s postal or mailing service.

With the launch of the GhanaPostGPS mobile app, you can now get access to your official Zip codes or postal codes with just a few button clicks. I strongly recommend you download the GhanaPostGPS app since it provides 5 x 5 addressing system for everywhere in Ghana.

Check your precise Ghana Zip Code or Postal Code by also using the browser version of the app here.
